It’s no secret that CBD is having a moment. Between the advancement of scientific research in the area and the growing desire for natural medicinal treatments, it’s no wonder that we are witnessing a proliferation of CBD offerings in our everyday world. Yet to many, the world of CBD remains a mystery clouded in stigma and myth. With this in mind, we devote this week’s Wellness Wednesday article to CBD and how it can help you achieve the best version of you!
What is CBD?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of over 100 naturally-occurring compounds found in the resinous flower of the hemp plant, Cannabis. When introduced to the body, CBD enhances the effects of our endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in improving the functioning of a variety of physiological developments, including immune activity, blood pressure, sleep, metabolism, intestinal fortitude, and mental health. In addition, research from the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) has indicated that CBD’s impact on the endocannabinoid system can actually slow the progression of disease.
Along these same lines, numerous scientific studies have found that CBD serves as a viable treatment to a variety of imbalances, including:
*Autoimmune diseases (inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis)
*Neurological conditions (Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Huntington’s chorea, stroke, traumatic brain injury)
*Metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity)
*Neuropsychiatric illness (autism, ADHD, PTSD, alcoholism)
*Gut disorders (colitis, Crohn’s)
*Cardiovascular dysfunction (atherosclerosis, arrhythmia)
*Skin disease (acne, dermatitis, psoriasis)
Is CBD Legal?
Yes! In 2018, the U.S. government legalized the cultivation of industrial hemp and removed CBD from the purview of the Drug Enforcement Administration. In June 2019, Louisiana further passed legislation allowing for the sale of hemp-derived CBD products to individuals who are 18 years or older.
Will CBD cause Intoxication or Euphoria?
No! While CBD is found in Cannabis, it is a safe, highly regulated, non-addictive compound that does not produce psychoactive effects of intoxication or euphoria. Rather, the compound, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the primary cannabinoid that produces such psychoactive effects in Cannabis. The CBD products available for sale at Hands on Health either do not contain THC or contain less than 0.3% THC, which is not enough to cause intoxication.
Why Should I Consider Using CBD?
As discussed above, CBD can improve overall physical and mental wellness while also slowing the progression of a variety of diseases. Further, CBD offers a natural, organic alternative to the big pharmaceutical medications that come with a variety of unwanted side effects.
Finally, CBD is easy to use as it comes in numerous forms such as essential oils, creams, and extracts that are easy and safe to incorporate into your daily wellness routine.
